Kind Words

Trusted by generations of PEI families.

"Had a great experience with G I Adams and our house turned out amazing. We thought building a house 1600 km away would have many challenges but with good communication with Charles and staff it was a non issue. Charles looked after the red tape involved with government agencies to get building permit. All we had to do is sign the building permit."

L Lewis G.Google G

"They built our forever home and never once made us feel like just another job. Every detail was exactly what we asked for, and a few things were even better than we imagined."

J John & SarahCornwall, PEI G

"Charles has built two beautiful homes for me over the past eight years. He listened carefully to what I envisioned for each home and accommodated all my wishes. I believe he delivers a high quality home and he stays true to the quoted price."

Custom Homes in Rustico

Building a home in Rustico, PEI.

GI Adams has handled custom home building across Prince Edward Island since 1973, working from our shop in Elmsdale. Rustico sits on the north shore, an old Acadian harbour community next to the national park, with the working wharf at North Rustico and the red cliffs and beaches close by. It is a familiar run for us toward the centre and the coast of the Island, and we build here for cottage owners, for families settling in year round, and for everyone in between.

Building near the shore asks for more care in how a house is placed and detailed. The wind off the gulf, the salt in the air and the open exposure of a coastal lot all factor into the work. We take time to read the site: where the prevailing wind comes from, how to shelter the home while still opening it to the view, and which exteriors, windows and roofing will stand up to shore weather over the long run. Good siting is half the job here, and we treat it that way.

The groundwork on a shore lot deserves the same care as the framing. Much of PEI sits on red soil and clay that holds water, so we grade the site to move runoff away from the house and set the building where it drains well rather than where water collects. Foundations go below our frost line so the winters do not heave them, and near the coast we pay particular attention to how the home is anchored and detailed against the wind. On an exposed lot the placement of the house, the grade and the approach all get worked out together before a footing is poured.

What we build in Rustico ranges from seasonal cottages to full year round homes, and the difference matters from the first drawing. A four season house on the north shore wants proper insulation and careful air sealing, a mudroom for sand and weather at the door, and durable finishes that take the climate without constant upkeep. We also think about energy as we build, since a well sealed and well insulated home on this coast is far easier and cheaper to keep warm through the winter. Whether you are after a simple coastal cottage or a home built to live in year round, we plan it for the way you will actually use it.

If you have a lot near Rustico, or you are still choosing one along the north shore, we are glad to walk it with you and talk through siting, exposure and what the build will involve. Early on we help you assess the lot and work through the permits and approvals a build needs, so the path is clear before we start. The first consultation is free, on your site or at the Elmsdale shop, and you leave with an honest, itemised quote. Get a quote when you are ready and we will find a time.

Before You Ask

Good to know.

Yes. A shore lot on the north shore takes extra care, and we plan for it. We look at the prevailing wind, the salt air and the exposure, then site the home to shelter it while still opening it to the view. Good placement is a big part of building well here.

We build both, and the difference matters from the first drawing. A four season home wants proper insulation, air sealing and finishes that take an Island winter. A simpler cottage is built for the seasons it is used. We plan whichever you are after around how you will use it.

By choosing the right materials and detailing for the exposure. Near the shore we use durable exteriors, windows and roofing suited to wind and salt, and we seal and flash the house carefully. The aim is a home that stands up to coastal weather without constant upkeep.
