GI Adams has been handling custom home building across Prince Edward Island since 1973, working out of our shop in Elmsdale. We take time to read the site before we draw: where the sun tracks through the day, how water moves across the ground, and which way the wind comes in winter, so the home is placed to suit the land rather than fight it. On a country lot you are usually on your own well and septic, and we plan for both early so they are part of the design from the beginning.
The groundwork comes first, and it matters as much as anything we frame. Much of central PEI sits on red soil and clay that holds water, so we grade the site to carry runoff away from the house and set the building where it drains well rather than where water wants to gather. Foundations go below our frost line so the winters do not heave them, and on a country lot we work out how the driveway, the yard and any walkout sit together before a footing is poured. Time spent getting the site right at the start is what keeps a home dry and steady for years.

We frame and insulate for our winters, air seal the house properly, and put a mudroom at the door to keep the cold and the weather out. How the house faces matters too: we set it to take the low winter sun and turn a little shelter to the prevailing wind, which keeps it easier and cheaper to heat through the colder months.
