GI Adams has handled custom home building on Prince Edward Island since 1973, and Tignish sits in our own end of the Island. From our shop in Elmsdale it is a short drive out to the far western communities, so working in Tignish and the harbour villages around it is familiar ground for us. We build for families putting down roots in the westernmost part of PEI, on lots in town and on land out toward the coast. Over fifty years here we have learned that a home in this part of the Island has to answer to its setting first, and that is where every project we take on out west begins.
Tignish is about as far west as the Island goes, close to North Cape where the wind comes in steadily off the gulf. That open, exposed setting is worth planning for from the start. We look at how a house sits on its lot, where the prevailing wind comes from, and how to place the home and its entries so the daily weather works with you rather than against you. Orientation, the line of the roof, and where the doors and the driveway go all make a difference once the winter sets in. On the more sheltered sites we still think about durable, weather-tight exteriors that hold up to salt air and a long Island winter, and about sealing and flashing details that keep wind-driven rain where it belongs.
Most of what we build out here is year-round family homes: practical layouts, a proper mudroom for boots and gear, generous insulation, and roofs and framing sized for Island snow load. We favour exteriors that take coastal weather without constant upkeep, and finishes that suit a working, lived-in home. Windows and doors are chosen to seal tight against the wind, and we build to hold heat through the cold months so the place is comfortable and affordable to run.
